Sunday: A Day of Rest

Today we took it a little easier, enjoying a wonderful buffet breakfast at our hotel before heading out to Cubbon Park which was created in 1870.  In the park and surrounding it, there were a number of buildings from the colonial days, now being swallowed up by the modern city.  We walked about thirty minutes from our hotel to the park (not a small feat given the traffic and lack of functioning pedestrian crossing lights) and then had a leisurely stroll through the gardens.  Many Bengalureans were doing the same. We also visited an Indian crafts shop on the way to the gardens.   The final photo is from our hotel room.

  1. Just caught up with your interesting travels to date. Getting any reading done? Who figures out the itinerary for each day's explorations? Sure seems empty of any tourists where you have been. Rand and Fred

A change of plans...While in Bengaluru, Joe got sick and we decided that rather than seeking medical attention in Indian, we would change our plane tickets and head to Paris, where we have been able to rent an apartment in the Latin Quarter near the Sorbonne.  Joe has recovered, but I got sick and have been taking it easy.  So now we begin a French adventure.

Historic New Delhi - A Contrast to Old Delhi

Today we toured a number of historic sites in New Delhi.  The pictures speak for themselves.  Clicking on the photos makes them larger.  Click no the name of the site for more information. Safdarjang's Tomb was built in 1753-54.  A burial place set in spacious gardens for Sardarjang, who was a very wealthy prime minister in the Mogul Empire.   Lodhi Gardens is a beautiful park in the centre of New Delhi which contains three tombs of rulers from the Lodhi Dynasty (1451-1526).   Humayun's Tomb might look somewhat familiar as the famous Taj Mahal is based on its design.  Built in 1570, it is a great example of Mughal architecture.  It is a UNESCO world heritage site.   Excavations at Purana Qila  are revealing an ancient settlement from around 1200 BCE.  They are on the site of Purana Qila, one of the oldest forts in Delhi and was built by the second Mughal Emperor Humayun. All of the Mughal emperors had a mosque...

Overnight in Japan

The journey to Delhi from Kamloops was three flights.  We broke up the long flight from Vancouver to Delhi with an overnight in Tokyo.  The first was 9 hours, and the second 9 1/2  hours.  Air Canada is no longer flying direct from Vancouver to Delhi due to not flying over Russian air space, while Air India, like many Asian airlines, continues to fly over Russia.  A direct flight is 15 hours.   Mt. We went for a stroll when we arrived at the hotel in Tokyo.  We discovered a Pachinko Hall.  While gambling is illegal in Japan, Pachinko, a game somewhat like a combination of a pinball and a slot machine, is seen more as an amusement rather than as gambling.   Joe outside a Pachinko Hall Inside the Pachinko Hall The hotel where we stayed overnight was a few kilometres from the airport.   RV Sized Bathroom in the Hotel Breakfast Japanese Styl...
